Growing up near the ocean, we have each seen the negative effects pollution has on our bays. Poor coastal property management and waste management design has led to the accumulation of excessive nutrients in our bay water, a process known as eutrophication. With excessive nitrogen, our water has darkened in color with the presence of massive algae blooms. These algae, many of which can produce harmful toxins to humans, also deplete the surrounding water of oxygen. Known as “hypoxia”, this depletion of dissolved oxygen is responsible for the mass killing marine life.
To stop this process from happening, organizations have begun employing nature’s solution: shellfish. A single oyster is capable of filtering 50 gallons of water a day. With an impressive capability to clean ocean water, oysters are now being planted in polluted areas in an effort to restore poor water quality. We are all stakeholders in the future of our ocean and the life that inhabits it. Our sustainability mission is to bridge the gap between those interested in preserving our oceans and the local organizations on the ground providing the labor needed to make a difference.
Through networking and maintaining close relationships with several non-profit organizations focused on ocean restoration, we are able to give our customers the opportunity to bind the meaning of their shirt to a direct contribution to the environmental effort of their choice.
